Thanking the universe for my silly little Christmas romance audiobook as it is actually the perfect antidote to the heavy material in this book.

The epigraph is a Louise Erdrich quote. I now have sky high expectations for this book.

My library waitlist timing is on point lately. A cozy fall read for the end of November, just in time before I go into winter hibernation mode.

Unfortunately I do not love reading about the civil war era. I’ve been working on this book on and off for two months, but I am determined to see it through. I know if I give up on it now, I’ll never pick it up again. I have loved the other McBride novels I’ve read so surely this will be worth it…? The witticisms are there, hopefully the clever twisty ending I’ve come to expect from him will be too.

Eh. Evidently I’m a slow burn kind of gal because I feel like there is very little chemistry here, plus the non-romantic plot line is not holding my attention much at all.

The way this book describes my experience so accurately is actually kind of exhausting. It’s validating, affirming, 100% worth reading, but having my struggles spelled out to me is a lot like reliving them. I’m having to take lots of breaks to get through this.

I really need the FMC to get a clue. Every other sentence she’s asking herself a question. (E.g. “I didn’t miss my family…did I?” “I didn’t mind wearing pants, did I?” Girl, do you or do you not?!) I didn’t realize this was a writing pet peeve of mine until now.

This is like a Disney movie for adults. It’s goofy and laughs at itself, and I’m enjoying it!
