How does Ms Henry manage one of the most incredibly emotionally intelligent male character ever written (in "Funny Story"), and then writes these men? Beach Read, Great Big Beautiful Life, People We Meet on Vacation (still mad at that one!), and then this? I am flabbergasted. I keep on reading her books hoping I get the same emotional depth of Funny Story, and instead I read progressively worse male characters.

How come we are still stuck in the single narrative frame of mind? Where are the books that break the stereotypes? Why are publishers not giving voice to those different stories, or is it us who don't want to read them?
I am about 1/3 of the way into Damon Copperhead. All the books I have read int eh past 5 years that were set int he American south are stories of neglect, poverty, abuse. This one doesn't break ranks

This so far reads about as interestingly as an accounting ledger. I am keeping on because it won the Pulitzer prize, right? It can't be this dreadful for real?? Keeping my fingers crossed.

Let me tell you how annoyed I am at this: THIS IS YA!!! I had no idea. Saw the great reviews, intrigued by the raves. I did not understand it is YA. I am probably going to put this in the DNF pile.

I am not even close to done, but this reads as if my 12 year old daughter wrote it. I'm about 10% and it is PAINFUL. I'm hoping in a turn for the best.
