Such interesting trivia about the USPS! Like how during the Civil War, mail delivery to the South was halted and the letters were routed to the Dead Letter Office who then sent them back to the senders. And how people did not use envelopes because that would be considered an extra sheet of paper (the fee was based on the number of sheets sent) and postage stamps were a relative new invention.

In the audiobook, the author's note and intro take up 77 minutes - some of the info is relevant, but that is way too long! I feel the intro could have been cut significantly. We get it - women did not have many career options back in the 1940s and were banned from many colleges. And the Army and Navy both had their own codebreaking units. We don't need to hear these general sweeping statements multiple times.

I am close to giving up on this book. It's all over the place.

Could do without so many curse words...

Finished Chapter 18. The dialogue by Higgins is particularly difficult to read.

Page 123 - Mrs. Hale mentions Higgins, which is a little odd because Higgins hasn't been mentioned before at the Hales'. I suppose maybe Margaret had talked about her visits with the Higginses before.

Finished Chapter 13.

Finished Chapter 7. Loving it so far (even as it differs from the BBC adaptation). But Heston and Helstone? Couldn't a different name have been chosen for one of the towns?

So far... it's okay. I feel like I'm reading a university research paper or dissertation. It's just so dry. And the font is small. And about 1/3 of the page is taken up by footnotes.

"We've grown to expect mediocre and even subpar service, products, and experiences in almost every aspect of our lives." (page 24). Amen to that, sadly.
