He'd always had a sarcastic edge to his tongue, never been someone to take a compliment gracefully, but it was as if there was something about Ty Blackthorn that reached into him and untied all the careful knots of protection holding him together.

Long ago the pieces of his soul had scattered, and every piece lived in one of his brothers or sisters. Except for the piece that lived in Emma, which had been burned into his home in her by the flame of the parabatai ceremony, and the pressure of his own heart.

Wendell raised his eyebrows in an unconvincing display of innocence. "Hm?"
"You are allowing Rose to come because he makes a good cup of coffee."

Ariadne screamed. Wendell yelped, "My God!" and snatched the bag of croissants away.
"Good grief," I said. "It's only a foot."
"Only a foot!" Ariadne cried as Wendell said, "Emily," in a scandalized tone.

"Did you enchant my pencil?" I demanded.
"I enchanted all of your pencils," he said, without opening his eyes. "You always have at least one on your person. I knew they would come in handy." He added, as I continued to stare at him, "Well, I can't carry a bloody sword around with me everywhere," misunderstanding entirely.

[Julian] wanted to relax into his older brother, let Mark hold him up the way he once had. But Mark was slighter than he was, fragile under his hands. He would be holding Mark up from now on. It was not what he had imagined, dreamed of, but it was the reality. It was his brother. He tightened his hands on Mark and adjusted his heart to bear the new burden.

[Emma's] face was open and completely trusting. I have always loved fieldwork, and I felt that familiar rush of excitement as I contemplated the field in question: before me lay uncharted scientific territory, and I the only explorer for miles. It is in moments like this that I fall in love with my profession all over again.
