Densely packed with historical information. Replaced much of the victors' mythology or the general lack of information about the aftermath of the war with vivid descriptions of the often tragic events that occurred during the postwar period.

Reads as a fact-filled narrative based on Shirer's first hand witnessing of events during the rise of the regime and more importantly to years of research based on the treasure trove of Nazi records captured at the end of the war. Is heavy on facts, but (so far) does not yield much in the way of analytic insights/conclusions. (Hannah Arendt's "The Origins of Totalitarianism" is better for historical interpretation)

Having been raised reading about the second world war, it's been surprising to know of the social and economic effects of this event. Is remarkable Europe rose so quickly from the destruction.
