Oh this is weird. A lot of coincidental similarities between this and Burnside by Devyn Defoe which also came out this year. The surrealist Californian landscape, roving feral anarcho tramps with weird nick names. Lynchian and bizarre. I’m having Déjà vu?

This is my third read of this book. And I only just discovered that this book is dedicated to Bret Easton Ellis! My fave of mine but some ppls most hated writer! And now I’m reading through this lense of how did BEE help DT write this book?! How was he involved!? Donna I have so many questions!

This is my second listen to the audiobook read by Donna Tartt. It’s my palate cleanser so I can sleep after reading The Disappearers. Did you know that Tartt dedicated this book to Bret Easton Ellis!!!

I’m pausing my read of this until I get a physical copy. The harrowing horrific violence is too much in audio format. Also I can’t read it before bed because it makes me sad. But honestly it’s probably going to win everything.

Alright Riley. I’ve DNFd in anger the last 2 books I’m feeling dumb for even trying again. So far so good but he’s known to biff it in the third act.

I’m gonna have to take this one slow. Absolutely top tier writing and it’s harrowing. The violence and homophobia is too upsetting for bedtime reading. Not a chocolate and popcorn book. It’s a whiskey and cigarettes book.

The deep bits are giving “this is the year of realizing things” vibes. Our young dude is realizing pretty basic life stuff but he’s a wee lad so I shouldn’t be so harsh. I think this is a book for 20-25 year old men.

Ok. I’m so sorry. I can’t stand the Gen Z amateur sleuths. Let’s put everything into a computer program called NANCY (after Nancy Drew) and then Nancy can tell us how to investigate the crime. Cutesy and young, no offence to Gen Z but like my sleuths a little rougher.

Standing at the corner of Glendale and King wondering whether or not to go into the McDonalds is almost too relatable. Loving the hyper local romp around Hamilton. The main character is a little milquetoast but I can tell there’s going to be a “coming of age” arc. Could tell it was angling to be a series by the 20% mark.

Ugh finally some good writing. I’m still recovering from Fruit Fly.

I have now endured maybe the worst sex(?) scene in audiobook format. I’m so cringed out so hard by this book.

Ugh. I have to finish at this point but womp womp

I’m putting it down in favour of other things. It’s not bad I’m just not interested right now. I’ll come back depending on reviews and short lists.

Just when I think I don’t like it it makes me chuckle. So wtf do I know.

I’m so uninterested in the main character. Generally, the interiority of a rich white man reliving his life while experiencing dementia or Alzheimer’s, is not a book I would pick up.
I’ve loved all her other books so I’m gonna trust her but damn I have to force myself to pick it up.
