urgh! another book where i can see why people like it but … i just don’t. I’m going to try and finish it but at the moment it’s really one big collection of 7 short stories told from characters who aren’t bonding or interacting that much 💀

so you know those books that everyone tells you to read, so you buy it and put it on a shelf but don’t rush to read because you secretly think it probably won’t live up to the hype?

and then like 10 years later you finally read it?? and then it’s so frustrating because it’s EXACTLY as good as everyone said it would be?????

Kind of a weird love/bored relationship with this book. On one hand it’s such a well crafted world with great multiple POVs. On the other, i just don’t care. I want to know what happens, yet at the same time im kind of bored while reading it??? I don’t know. I enjoy it but i also don’t really at the same time

i should not be liking this. it’s almost everything that usually makes me tune out of a book:
- a ginormous amount of scientific info dumping
- very very very slow plot
- ridiculously sized chapters (sometimes 150+ pages)
- characters that are well developed but don’t really have deep connections
- did i mention the GLACIAL plot pace

BUT i love it. i can’t put it down. i need to know what’s going to happen!

okay if i could’ve imagined a !perfect! first chapter for this book, it would’ve been EXACTLY what Matthew Stover has written here! DAMN!!!

I’d heard that this was a great novelisation but??!!! i wasn’t expecting so much character work already??????

i’m so excited for the rest of the book

i’m liking this so far - but i’m not adoring it. It’s fun and interesting, and i like the characters of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell buttttt there’s little to no real overarching plot, and so it feels a little like wandering around just for the sake of wandering around. I’m hoping something comes up in the second half? but i don’t think it’s really that kind of book

really enjoying this - it’s a lot more lighthearted than i assumed it would be, but in a very enjoyable way

okay book 2 down: i really enjoyed the first half of book 2, but found the second half dragged a little

Book 1: done ✅

I actually loved this first story (even with that ending). I couldn’t stop thinking about it when I put it down, and i was a little desperate to know how it would end.

I’m definitely excited to see what Book 2 brings.

those first few pages nearly gave me an aneurysm. oh man ahaha that was jumping in the deep end haha

so i’ve opted to read along with the audiobook to make it a little easier and it’s going great now

Not really loving this one. It’s very very very plot driven, and not really an in depth style story. It follows that old style of writing where things happen very quickly and from a detached style of narration.

I’m thinking i’ll finish the first book (it’s a combination of four books in one) and then DNF it if it doesn’t pick up
