Sometimes you just need to read an English children’s book from the 1930s in my opinion..

DNF (audio) @ 60%.

The plot interests me, but I find the narrator so insufferable (both in the past, which he is recounting, as well as in the present, via the recounting itself). He is completely self-absorbed and self-pitying, without any real hint of growth. While this may be the point of the novel, I just can't put up with it any longer.

Hanging on for the original content! I’m interested to see if/how Gratton will change the ending. I hope she does—to me, this book feels most powerful when it diverges from Shakespeare, and most stilted when it’s trying to mimic those scenes exactly. Sometimes it comes across very sparknotes-y.

The thing about King Lear is that none of the characters are likable...so I’m having a hard time caring about them in this MUCH lengthened retelling. Still very much in Act I, Scene I after over a hundred pages, and I feel like the love test comes across as even less believable in the context of this setup. Plus the language/magic is over the top without feeling intentional. I’ll keep going but dk for how long.

The first 2 essays were compelling—research for the sake of understanding a time period & population to inform fiction (a film and a novel, respectively). Third essay is about figuring out exactly when Einstein came up with the theory of relativity. Fine except the author gives no context for why it matters that we know the exact date & time. So I don’t know why I should care...

So far, these stories are brilliant. Genevieve Valentine, Carrie Ryan, NK Jemisin. All make me want to pick up the authors' other works. Such compelling, smart storytelling.

I highly resent the fact that this book puts me unwillingly in the role of Eva's talk therapist, essentially, but a therapist who has to sit silently and listen to endless anecdotes and non sequiturs made by an absolutely insufferable narcissist. Not sure I can get through this one, even though I have to read it for class.

Several people promised me that I would LOVE Louise Penny, but I'm not liking this at all. The language feels very trite and the characters seem to act without motivation. I'm having trouble adjusting to the 3rd person omniscient pov, which doesn't seem to make any sense for this genre. I have to read it for class, so I'll finish it. Hopefully my feelings will change!
