Hanging on for the original content! I’m interested to see if/how Gratton will change the ending. I hope she does—to me, this book feels most powerful when it diverges from Shakespeare, and most stilted when it’s trying to mimic those scenes exactly. Sometimes it comes across very sparknotes-y.

The thing about King Lear is that none of the characters are likable...so I’m having a hard time caring about them in this MUCH lengthened retelling. Still very much in Act I, Scene I after over a hundred pages, and I feel like the love test comes across as even less believable in the context of this setup. Plus the language/magic is over the top without feeling intentional. I’ll keep going but dk for how long.
