This story about the mad doctor is painfully long and predictable. Its going for build up but its failing.

After a slow start (the first 3 chapters are an almost academic introduction to the world of Gor) the book heats WAY up. This is not a book welcome in the modern day where "Rape culture" and "Toxic Masculinity" are on so many lips but it is a barbaric fantasy that doesn't shy away from how men and women's roles would shake out in a Might Makes Right environment. Intense and sexy I can't wait to read more GOR!

I don't much care for third person pov but it's done well so far. I especially like that I cringed when the girl was obsessively googling Ortega. That's the kind of visceral reaction I want!

Erotica? Romance? BDSM?

Ok there is bondage but this is a prolonged torture porn story. This is women being brutalized and abused. I'm not saying that it's bad (this is a type of story which doesn't get told enough) but it's not erotic.

I went into this expecting a modern Claiming Sleeping Beauty and it seems I'll have to adjust my expectations for what this really is... a horror story.

So far I haven't seen much that's new to me. There are slave training online games with hentai girls that basically follow the training methodology in this story. That said this is from the slave's pov not the trainer's and comes across as far more rapey than erotic. It's a fine line in this sort of extreme story but so far it's very much on the uncomfortable side.

Conflicts are starting pretty late in the game. I'm starting to worry that this will end on a stinger that drags you into the sequel.

There's a good character building reason for it but that doesn't mean the drop in momentum isn't a bit of a buzz kill. Its easy to see what is coming so its hard not to skim to that point.

Geez this is going to be a hard review to write. I mean the book is between 4 and 5 stars no question (I won't jump to conclusions it could fizzle) but were I to summarize the plot it would sound awful. This story should be tedious and cliched but it isn't. It's a fresh take on a familiar concept and I'm really enjoying it.

I feel bad about taking so long to get through this book but, at the same time, I'm enjoying it and thus want to take my time. That said I am beginning to fear that the story is veering in a predictable direction. I don't know YET, however, so I guess all I can do is keep reading and find out.

I am liking Leila and her relateability but I am a little worried about predictability. At the point I'm at the plot needs a twist but I'm trying hard not to guess what that could be. I tend to be good at that and I don't want to ruin the story for myself

There are some grammatical errors that put me off at first. Then I began reading it with a russian accent and suddenly I didn't notice them. There's always a mental fix for minor issues like that :)

Charlotte's story is concluded and now all that is left is the historical notes. I keep crying, damn it I'm an adult. I know the history. I've held items from WW1 and spoken to my father (born 1939) who knew many a vet well. Yet something about this book made it all so much more real. I wish Charlotte was real so I could lay flowers at her grave.

Imagine a baseball bat made of sadness. The author seems to have created one and is randomly lurking on different pages ready to give you a good wack with it. The rest of the time she builds a false sense of security so you'll cry harder on the next hit. It's great.

Well I've just completed the Dec. 6th entry and had to stop to cry and google if Charlotte Blackburn was a real person just to remind myself of what was made clear by the all-too-timely references she makes. Flander's Fields. I can't help but wonder how I'd feel to have my child go through that.

I'm on the entry from Oct. 14, 1917 but it's so hard to read. A sweet child with such heavy burdens on her mind already and Dec. 6th getting closer with every page. Part of me wants to skip ahead but another part wants to take my time so that I can appreciate the impact of those events.

A lot of stuff has happened but it doesn't really seem to connect. It's literally just stuff that happened in the girl's life.

Also I'm yet to see a sex scene that's anything more than the literary equivalent of the camera panning away when things get good. There's more detail in descriptions of fake scabs than on descriptions of sex.

Great so she's ready to go out and party, meet the Juliette society, do what the book jacket says. Over 3 hours into the audiobook. Seriously needed to cut some fat out of this.

Oh, looks like the plot is kicking in. I was beginning to think this book would just be Sasha Grey's thoughts on stuff.

I'm about 1/7th of the way through the audiobook and she's musing about cum. Where's the rich guy sex club? Is this the author or the character? Focus girl!

I've never read a book that's so...interesting without being arousing. I'm studying each erotic scene like a zoologist studying mating habits. It's so similar to what I like and yet so off puttingly different. I can't look away!

I think the surprise "sexy" things are more interesting than the fairy tale over tones. Oh and he likes armpit hair, oh and she had a penis. Please tell me little Red Riding Hood is coming up?

This is going to get absolutely blasted for grammar which sucks because the story (if a little cliche) is pretty hot so far.

I know it's a mistake to question the practicalities of sexual fantasy but I raise an eyebrow at a woman strutting out her front door and instantly finding hot guys who are interested in her.
