Oh dear this may be my first DNF of 2026…the mountain air is “cool” and crows, they “caw” and I just can’t with the exposition. Picked this as a Canada Reads selection but a bit disappointed so far

This is absolutely heinous. The characters are TERRIBLE and the plot is so god damned demeaning to the older female characters. I’m embarrassed this is written by a woman. And yet, I’m 36% done already. Damn these suspenseful plots!

This one might be my first DNF on that new fangled shelf. I’m just not feeling it. TBD!!!

I mean, the man was born in 1888, I suppose I can forgive the odd “he’s a f*g” or two. But, like, is noir as a genre partially responsible for the toxic masculinity of the modern age, or what?!? Ugh.

Recommended (thx Em!) and woefully it’s taken me almost a week to crack the spine. I went down a wee Slow Horses (the Apple TV show) rabbit hole this past week while traveling for work. Back on the reading wagon!

Finding this hard to get into. Too hard boiled. Too “here’s a dame that needs a little slap”. The writing is excellent though.

“Why shouldn’t the death of a person you love bring you into lurid ruin? You don’t know how to love the ones you love until they disappear abruptly. Then you understand how thinly distanced from their suffering, how sparing of self you often were, only rarely unguarded of heart, working your networks of give and take.”

Wow. This chapter about why Stratt didn’t want any female astronauts is fucking brutal. Is this supposed to be funny? Men can’t keep it in their pants and will fight over a woman so no female astronauts allowed? And even if this gives Rand the chance to be the good moral character, WTF is it with the author referring to male characters by last names but female astronaut by first? Fuck this sexist bullshit.

it isn’t that I’m not enjoying this but the Stratt part of this novel is so sophomoric it’s embarrassing. If you are gonna do right by science, don’t make a mockery of law. Stratt shows an “international treaty” showing she’s “personally immune from prosecution anywhere on earth”. Um a) this is a civil suit. b) international treaties have no force of law domestically. C) she is not the defendant.

I really wish this was more interesting and the characters more compelling.

Neat story and I won't regret reading it but its a little too jokey, dialoguey, sciency, cliche character development for my tastes...like Mr. Weir (who I very much commend for turning a clear passion for science into a writing career) was already anticipating the next screenplay.
