So far I’d call this “depressing low class suburban life and there’s a vampire.”

I didn’t realize there’s another book by this author, Wilding, that may have been more relevant to me. Book of Wilding is still very informative but it’s very much aimed at landowners or people with gardens they wish to rewild, getting into much more technical discussions of soil nitrogen levels, what trees to use, types of ponds to pursue, and so far.

I was really hoping for a thriller but so far it’s been ham-fisted social commentary and endless food descriptions through a somewhat not-great translation.

That moment when you realize there are no chapters.

We had a good 100 pages of excitement and now we are back to a slog. More than halfway and honestly not much has happened, plot wise. I can respect the world building but the bulk of the book has been dialogue and way more tell than show. Paul is almost a John Stu. I’m struggling to care, honestly. But I still want to finish.

Total tone and writing change at about the 150 page mark and now we’re cooking with gas.

I can appreciate how this changed science fiction, and essentially created the space opera genre (my favorite type of scifi), but the writing style hasn’t aged well. It’s a bit of a slog.
