The aim, see, is to use cool as a stepping-stone to politics.

Good. Some sections are in 3rd person about character "Elza," others start with "Elza." in bold type like some editions of plays and are narrated by Elza.

This was given to me as a gift, maybe about a year ago, and I read a very small amount before putting it on the shelf, but over the last couple nights I've started over and love it. Some exceptional art, and an epic sense of Weimar (or better call it interwar, since it isn't playing much into usual Weimar tropes) Berlin, through a diverse (politically, economically, age-ly) set of characters. Nice

I'm reading this very slowly, and that's because some of it is a little slow. But it's also got a really good atmosphere, a sense of mystery/historical intrigue, and a few very interesting characters. Probably it could have been edited down some, but I don't think I mind

So far, this book is populated by well-shaded characters. One of them is named Nastasya Filippovna Barashkov, another General Ivan Fyodorovich Epanchin. I enjoy reading about them, along with the very famous character Prince Myshkin. Getting to know Prince Myshkin reminds me of how it once felt to get to know, for example, Sancho Panza.

This book is very good. and the narrator Mattis's voice is distinct and appropriate to certain aspects of his increasingly comprehensible personality. The narrator Mattis is very afraid of thunder.

I think I would think of Knut Hamsun even if this were not a Norwegian novel, but it's possible that this could not have been written by a non-Norwegian author. Partly this is due to aspects of rural Norwegian society.
