This book is very good. and the narrator Mattis's voice is distinct and appropriate to certain aspects of his increasingly comprehensible personality. The narrator Mattis is very afraid of thunder.
I think I would think of Knut Hamsun even if this were not a Norwegian novel, but it's possible that this could not have been written by a non-Norwegian author. Partly this is due to aspects of rural Norwegian society.
