A lot more meat about Nash's contributions to Mathematics, US national defense and, of all things, social sciences, including economics & political science. The movie version was somewhat enlightening, but focused mainly on his peculiar brand of on-off schizophrenia. Nasar's book honors Nash's mighty intellect while confronting the reality of his mental variability. Thoroughly enjoyable!

Not so sure about the 'omniscient author' approach to fictionalized history that begins in the early 1920's and captures a variety of major events up through end of WWII, along with the author's insights on those events through her characters' conversations. Title was familiar, but couldn't recall until chapters using Olivier Messiaen's dissonant work of the same name. A fine read, tho ponderous @ times

Though others seem to think interior dialogues over-intellectualized, something about endless brutality in war brings out brilliant thinking. It may be a bit snobbish to think that working-class people don't have profound rational thoughts.

I cheated, I confess, and updated my progress on this book only after I read it. It requires some psych in one's background to read without having to consult a dictionary/Wikipedia for some technical terms. But the book is astoundingly insightful and compassionate about those with profoundly damaged human minds, giving hope to those who cannot recover, only adapt.

Frank Webb is finished with A Short History of Nearly Everything
Excellent read; finished it a month ago. Took me all the way back to the depths of the development of science beginning in the 18th century; continued into paleontology then finally into the broad concerns of today w/ our abuse of our home planet.
