What is frustrating here, I think, is that there is an interesting book buried within far too much performative, self-mythologising MFA writing by the author

Alcibiades is fascinating

Huzzah! Back in TP land!

The funny thing is both this and the last of hers I read take place where I live in London. It is always an odd sensation when one is reading a novel and the character turns down one’s street, or to the pub at the end of the road. A character was just waiting at the traffic lights I had waited at 20min earlier on my way home this evening. Makes it all feel more “mine” somehow.

This is just excellent.

The topic is an important and fascinating one, sadly I am finding this a bit of a mess. It just feels like there is too much for him to get a proper handle on, and too much to cover (unsurprisingly), so it doesnt really hang together.

Apparently according to Goodreads I read this in 2013, but I remember nothing, so am doing a re-read during a trip to Italy.

This is, I think, maybe the 6th of his novels I have read. All have been extremely impressive. This is no different so far.

The water from Font de la Jonquilla had to be filtered. In the fountain little worms curled and uncurled, rapidly. If they entered a person's body, they burrowed through bones, veins, and skin in order to escape. As soon as they broke the surface, they died, because they could not live without water.

This is extraordinary

This is just lovely stuff. It is funny, reading this now as parent of a gay child, how strongly my protective instinct toward Stephen is. Not to patronisingly protect HER per se, but to clear a path, to fight those that get in the way of her being her. To give her space to be. I think the current climate and erosion of LGBTQ+ rights is probably making it all rawer for me. Regardless, I am feeling this book today.

You all need to be reading G.E Trevelyan and, more generally, you all need to be checking out Boiler House books and their publications done with Neglected Books in particular.

Boiler House Press are consistently knocking it out of the park. You should go check out their books.

Every movie or TV adaptation of this completely misrepresents the text. These people are absolutely awful.

I know I read this when I was 15 or so (30 years ago!!) and I know I have seen movies and adaptations, but I can’t remember a damn thing. So reread as first read.
