I’m not a classics hater but I’m also not much of a classics relator, unfortunately. I think I’d enjoy this more if I were studying it and grounding it in context. As it is, some moments hit while overall I’m just kinda unmoved.

with two and a half days left in the year, there's 0% chance I end up with a 2023 total of 99 books read but I can enjoy another 8, especially doing a new year's readathon so I'm just gonna quietly change my goal to 75 😎

based on the blurb I thought I was maybe getting into some hurrr durrbr technology is scary and thomas edison was a witch but this has not been that so far, it’s way more reflective even if it is slightly leaning in that direction it has its reasons

the structure is most intriguing, lots of little moments out of order and some that are consecutive

I cannot express how much I relate to the wife. She just broke up with the cat. Like not in a Bee Movie way, but it’s lowkey hilarious even though she’s legit angry.

bigger mood to be the wife letting the cat sleep in bed with her while the husband’s on a work trip

just thinking abt how much of a mood it is to set up a bed and food and water (well milk in this case) for someone else’s cat just because it sneaks in whenever it wants to. I love cats

the prose is so pretty and flowy. like there’s not even a ton happening with plot it’s just building up the narrator’s life into something three-dimensional, layer by layer, with some really absorbing language and it’s working for me

her voice is so pleasant, conversational, and entertaining already

even though the pit in my stomach has known where this story is headed, I just had to skip to end end just to prepare myself for specifics. and like. emotionally this is just a bitchslap but I like how direct a discussion it’s having actually

this is so frustrating to read because it should really seem outlandish some of the things his classmates say and do but like.. that reaction has a shelf life of like .002 seconds because instantly you’re hit with at least one memory of a white or nonblack person saying either the exact same nonsense or really fkn similar and it’s like yeah that the opposite of a reach this happens a lot

it’s messed up how you know from the first line exactly how shit’s gonna play out in chapter one and like the whole time I’m like ughhhhhhh

okay so one of the best parts of this book is each interaction between Camille and Auguste because it’s very “you’re gonna have to do more to impress me” “wow ouch” slow burn humor to romance (presumably), and it’s kinda boosting my interest overall

I feel like it’s fair to say we’re getting commentary on beauty and social standards, and there’s been a lot of almosts, but Camellia dealing with her first client is the first time it hits that bullseye for me.

The writing flows nicely and I’m curious enough to keep reading, but it’s not holding my attention very well since I keep giving in to any distraction.

you know like.. a name is almost the same as yours but not quite and then, of course, the other name sounds wrong and almost grating because it’s an easy way to mispronounce your own??? well Camellia is gonna take some getting used to
