Keliani is 90% done with Sensational Flesh: Race, Power, and Masochism (Sexual Cultures, 43)
Almost at the end (currently on the conclusion chapter) AND just realized I got a different ISBN than the one I got logged... Anyway, what a ride.

Had to stop to record the reaction to the beginning of the Lacerated Breasts's chapter. Wow. Again, I think I had an entirely different idea of what to expect but this is so good. Interesting medicine/pain and S&M prime with Lorde and Bob Flanagan's performance.

Took a moment to log while reading because this chapter started off great. As much as I appreciate the framework Fanon provided to understand the colonized mind, the critiques on the lack of nuance (or overt exclusion?) on his analysis of the black woman on the search for lactification/infantilization of her desires via Mayotte are on point. Wasn't there a similar critique for Césaire?

Been dwelling on Objectification, Complicity and Coldness. The highlight has been the evaluation of the masochist's desire for recognition & Musser's point on agency: the masochist cannot achieve full objectivity because on their pursuit for it their agency reifies their subjectivity; simultaneously objectifying the Master, ignoring their desire (their own search for pleasure vs. the pleasure for the masochist).

Just started, the introduction is banging! Musser begins with the concept of masochism per Krafft-Ebing, Freud, Foucault, Bersani and Edelman to position it as an analytical tool. Enjoyed the reading of S/M from Foucault as a call to build new forms of kinship from subversion plus then she says without hesitation "Hey, let's not stop there" to set sexuality aside in favor of difference.

Re-reading. Esta vez se siente como leerlo a tiempo y con mejor comprensión de muchos de los conceptos que se vieron antes (deracialization or lactification; the psychosis from different angles like rejection/repulsion of blackness (Mayotte, Nini) vs. the inability to see oneself as anything other than black or the Other (Jean Veneuse) both by.. proximity to whiteness.

Could have finished it today after a long reading leg past the 1st half of the book! it's just that physically I couldn't read anymore. In all honesty, per reviews & summaries I thought this book was quite different to what I've read, but specific quotes about Death made me continue reading past the Astrology observations and theories. Plus, I've found Tokarczuk rather easy to read, I'm enjoying it more and more.

"[...] And then it occurred to me that in a way Big Foot's death might be a good thing. It had freed him from the mess that was his life. And it had freed other living Creatures from him. Oh yes, suddenly I realized what a good thing death can be, how just and fair, like a disinfectant, or a vacuum cleaner. I admit that's what I thought, and that's what I still think now."

Phewwwww, very obviously in for a ride.

Estoy tan tan pero TAN feliz de haber conseguido una copia de Kim Ji-young en español.. Llevaba meses tratando de conseguirla en algún lado que no fuera Amazon y creo que terminaré triste porque se lee de una sentada.
