Continuing this fascinating book, the next chapter Babulù Ayé looks at "Latin" music. Joe Boyd is thankfully colour-blind & aware of the racial undercurrents that swirl around this music.How Castro lifted the colour bar in Cuba but then cracked down on what he saw as sexual permissiveness, even dancing - leaving the way open for New York to sweep in,as indigenous Afro-Cuban stars were swept aside .

Just finished the first chapter. Joe Boyd was one of the record producers involved in the creation of the "world music" category, but his expertise crosses all musical borders. It is a joy to read, too many anecdotes to mention. Savvy - and politically acute. Has me rushing to the playlists 😄

Alternative universes,a detective plot,and aliens called the Jackaroo who have gifted 15 worlds to humanity. This is starting to get nicely wierd....

a couple of chapters in,and already enjoying this hugely : it will drive me back to the music,for sure.
