This book is awesome. I can't remember the last time I've read something this fun.

Well, the book has finally begun to get interesting. Maybe everything that has come before this point will prove important, but I doubt it.

So the first few chapters had me preparing for a slog as the obvious is slowly "revealed", but no, the character is as smart as he's supposed to be and now has the rest of the book to do something about it. Unless the ending sucks, nothing I write about the book will be free of bias, because I just love it so far. 2014 is shaping up to be an awesome year for epic SF. Woot!

It seems like maybe someone at the publisher should have caught that the plural of ronin is not ronins.

Although I'm enjoying the heck out of this, I suspect that my opinion cannot be trusted as Harkaway both makes me feel clever for keeping up with his various digressions and saying things that I already agree with, all without making me feel pandered to.

notes from previous chapter: trade as energy transfer system (think thermodymamics); military as society unto itself, especially in regards to suppression of insurrection.

If it hadn't been such a pain to purchase this ebook, I would have ditched it weeks ago. Kindle tells me that I have about three hours of reading left, ugh.

It sounds awful, but I think that switching over to Sanderson is the best thing that happened to this series. I'm eight discs in and not a single braid has been pulled, nor a single pair of arms folded under breasts. I still find the women unbelievable and annoying, but I am engaged in the story, at least.

So far, so good. What is strange, however, is that after skipping books 9 - 13, everything makes sense. Looking forward to finally finishing this series, and it looks like the conclusion will be satisfying.

What Arms To Hold Us by Rajan Khanna. Solid story, but I felt somewhat ambivalent about the ending.

Good Girl by Malinda Lo - The story felt too over the top and maybe a little bit preachy. Pocket Full of Dharma by Paolo Bacigalupi - Maybe it's just me, but I have a hard time getting into stories about characters of whom the world has robbed all meaningful agency and ambition. Blue Skies by Cindy Pon - Another high point in this collection. I really liked watching a character who responds to despair with a plan.

"The Next Door" by Rahul Kanakia - Hmmm. Had a hard time believing that industrious people living on the edge of a society that is dying and crumbling by way of distraction would choose to scavenge and scrounge rather than build on the ruins.

Read "Gods of the Dimming Light" by Greg van Eekhout. Good story, although I'm probably biased due to the Norse Mythology in the story.

Just finished Ken Liu's story, Pattern Recognition. My initial reaction to it was dislike, as it seemed as though he were defending Dr. Gau, but his blog post about it makes it seem as though he was trying to say the opposite. Weird.

Skipped the Daniel H. Wilson excerpt, as I have already read the book. The Uncertainty Principle was quite good.

So the first story seems to make the case that if we hadn't used nuclear weapons on Japan that they wouldn't have surrendered, which is debatable. As they say, the only justification for doing something terrible is to say that something worse would have happened otherwise.
