P. 381 — Swoon! Liz Moore does not fall into the trap so many writers do, which is to misuse the phrase “begs the question” when, in fact, they mean, “raises the question.” This makes her an anomaly. A brilliant, sparkling anomaly.

I love that Moore calls out the Thoreau Myth. (p. 264) Thoreau was “alone” on Walden like Marie Antoinette was a dairymaid down at the hamlet.

The book jacket contains phrases like “deliriously smart,” “sparkling wit” and “ferociously clever.”

I would add “teeth-grindingly glib,” “slick-to-the point-of-Deepwater-Horizon oiliness.”

Hard not to judge Loretta Young harshly. Her claims that her months long affair with Clark Gable and the resulting pregnancy with Lewis were the result of date rape are hard to countenance.

Of course, a child born out of wedlock would have torpedoed her career, so she was stuck between a rock and a hard place. But…not a great mother, this woman. Poor Judy.
