I skipped the intro bc it was making me hate the book before I'd given it a chance. I also am trying to tell myself the stilted Bibleish quality to the writing is something inflicted by translation and that initial perception. I don't want to read this book, but it's the book club pick /o\

Real over the way "madness" and "crazy" are used here. Even the shit like "curated crazily/with madness by Gerard Way" (no idea what that means, must be something about how the Young Animal line is produced, but really that phrase being on every issue says a lot about the tone and style of this comic. Bleh).

Guessing on percent-doneness. Strange, not exactly fun ride so far. Both visual and verbal storytelling seem weirdly determined to keep me distanced from scenes, uncertain of what exactly is happening.

I made the mistake of reading the introduction to this one assuming it was, like, a scholarly introduction? But the author of the intro's credentials are she's written some books. As I read, I keep mentally arguing with her claim that Lady Russell didn't persuade Anne, that that is not the persuasion of the title, when HOLY SHIT, LADY, DID YOU READ THIS BOOK?

It kind of feels like cheating to count comics in my reading challenge (even though they're all collected volumes/longer books), just because I burn through those fast. Ah, well!

Speculating embarrassingly with Penny, who has read this book while I have not. Magnus is already hurting me. I need to know more about Sam immediately.

I've been seeing the "significant annoyance" post for days and I honestly thought it was just a tumblrism.

Surprisingly, already really enjoying this. Spoilery thoughts so far on ASIC as a Holmes adaptation: http://minnarr.tumblr.com/post/144207...

Ah - a bit of elaboration on the "feminized" comment. :) Households moving away from traditional patriarchy towards being more spiritualized and mother-centric as they would be in Victorian era.

Can't tell if weird gendering is them or the period yet. At 35, Elijah Pierson was unmarried and likely a virgin. "Elijah's rise from farm boy to merchant had gone well. His passage from youth to manhood was deferred and confused." I wish the authors used more footnotes; is this their embellishment or does manhood = married man in Elijah's worldview? Same w/ their characterization of Finneyism as "feminized."

jsyk i've been at this point for days because i don't know if i can put up with this long enough to figure out exactly how weird karou/akiva is. 90% sure we're not gonna find out who karou is till marrakesh because of course he's had an epiphany and they're splitting up.

Apologies if I flood the updates; my library is transferring to a new online system soon and I have some lists on there I want to make sure I keep.

I realize I have broken the dreaded seal-of-goodreads-comments but oh my god. Please establish trust instead of this stupid supernatural wanting-to-jump-Akiva's-bones-or-maybe-just-hug-it-out nonsense. Please. Like, this is the famous devil and angel who fall in love, right? If so, this is a really boring and hard-to-get-attached-to way to do it.

If this instalove/weird fated-seeming attraction nonsense is because <spoiler>Karou's somehow Madrigal reincarnated or something</spoiler> I will absolutely revolt. I am impatient with this. Make it more interesting or get back to the plot soon, please. Only upside is she's getting a lot of info, which we've both been hungry for.

"It was only much later that I would understand what Sebby meant by this." TRC has conditioned me in such a way that I now expect the weird-ass second-person POV and ominous hints about Sebby are gonna mean he's a ghost. Probably just something bad is gonna happen. Likely self-inflicted. Sidenote; The growing connection between J and the other two hasn't been done very well. Told, not shown. I haven't really felt it.

I want to see where this is going, but the perspective thing is kind of bugging me. I was sort of getting used to the fact that Jeremy's chapters are in first person and Mira's are in third and was hoping a reason would emerge (like Jeremy's really the viewpoint character so we get in through his head or something). But now it's a Sebby chapter. And he's in second person. Dear God, why?

When I was younger, the one thing that spoiled by enjoyment of this book was that certain details seemed to be drawn from Disney's version. Except? This was published 13 years before the movie came out. Just one example of those details here: the Beast wears blue velvet with lace at his throat and wrists. Now I wonder: do they have a common source those details come from? Did Disney draw on McKinley? Coincidence?

so it's not often i say this, but i actually keep wistfully wondering about the book-that-could-be if the male best friend was the protag. (well, of course i latched onto the ace best friend. but it would also mean subplots with mark would be less unbearable because the secrets could be unraveled in the context of their epically dysfunctional family. and at least the mark/ellie stuff would be off to the side).
