Can't tell if weird gendering is them or the period yet. At 35, Elijah Pierson was unmarried and likely a virgin. "Elijah's rise from farm boy to merchant had gone well. His passage from youth to manhood was deferred and confused." I wish the authors used more footnotes; is this their embellishment or does manhood = married man in Elijah's worldview? Same w/ their characterization of Finneyism as "feminized."

Ah - a bit of elaboration on the "feminized" comment. :) Households moving away from traditional patriarchy towards being more spiritualized and mother-centric as they would be in Victorian era.
