Easier than Owen Wright.

So much easier to read than Owen Wright. I'm part way through the first treatise now.

Up to 793AD, finished 4 chapters. Well written, more engaging than the Very Short Introduction book on same topic.

I'm up to about the year 800, just before the Vikings start raiding. It's well written and held my interest longer than most history books. I may come back to it again.

Really enjoying this. 1st book I've read by the author, because it was the only one available to checkout from my library on Kindle. Definitely will read more by her!

Just 4 chapters in, but wow! Such scathing commentary on the gentry. I can see why Jane's sister burned her letters to keep them from the public.

Just up to chapter 4 and wow! I can't believe how scathing this is towards the gentry! I can see why her sisters burned her letters rather than let them become public. It's all very genteel of course, and if I'd read it when I was younger I can't say as I would have caught it.

I've never read anything like this. Sadly, not a compliment. The story is fine, but the writing style is awful. It tells rather than shows. I was wondering if it was just the translation that was bad, but I think it's the writing. In fact, the title must apply to the writing rather than the story. I won't be reading any of the sequels.

Book 1 of 4 re-read.

This is such a long book that I might not read anymore.
