Finished Sense & Sensibility, and I’m afraid I would have to give it a solid 2 star rating. The characters seem silly from today’s perspective, overly emotional and virtuous (even given the historical context). The descriptions are tedious, the eternal comments on character explain too much.

I understand that this is a youthful, early novel centered around young women with little exposure to the world. Even so, some of it (in reading) seems even sillier than the film. I’m not sure whether Marianne making herself ill with a broken heart, Willoughby‘s self-pity or Ellinor‘s eternal goodness and moral fortitude are most annoying.
