Nearly 100 pages in, there is one chapter I’ve enjoyed so far. In it, Hemingway imagines a conversation with people who have just seen their first bullfight. He rejects every single person who did not enjoy the fight. That leaves one old woman to talk to. He asks her why she liked the fight and pretty quickly decides it was for the “wrong” reasons, which frees him from having to ask her any more questions.

Part 2, Chapter 3 contains a perfect description of permaculture as the author describes an estate that is exceptionally productive and where the owner makes sure that every plant covers multiple functions. I love how you can always count on 19 th century Russian lit for treatises on land management, too.
