He’s now free to monologue to her about all of the things she should enjoy about the sport, which we all know is what he wanted anyway. It is brilliant. It shows exactly who Hemingway is as a writer without any actual self awareness on his part.

Nearly 100 pages in, there is one chapter I’ve enjoyed so far. In it, Hemingway imagines a conversation with people who have just seen their first bullfight. He rejects every single person who did not enjoy the fight. That leaves one old woman to talk to. He asks her why she liked the fight and pretty quickly decides it was for the “wrong” reasons, which frees him from having to ask her any more questions.
