Im enjoying this book, dont get me wrong, but the Mary Sue moments have me eye rolling. Arabella apparently invented pole dancing (more than 50 years before it actually became popular). Gideon? He suggested the term "impressionist" to his new friend, Monet. It's a little painful how these characters are being forced into history.

Does anyone else feel put off a book when they are faced with a list of "tropes this book includes"? I understand that tropes exist for a reason, but I really hate the concept of selecting a book merely because the author has seen fit to include a checklist of what to expect

And now we are onto Golden syrup. Which wasn't invented until 1883. They were spot on for baking powder though - it was developed in 1843 as a substitute for yeast, by Alfred Bird, because his wife was allergic to yeast.

Nanny has just produced a plaster to cover an injury on the boy's knee, leading me to research when sticking plasters were invented. It was 1920, it appears. This book is set in 1851.

Another height variable couple, with an Adam Driver look-alike. Still, its a cute book. I just wish theyd stop having tall men with tiny women. And I'm not entirely convinced this isn't Reylo fix despite the addition of the twin nieces.

Currently rather enjoying this semi-biographical, but also quite fictional, mystery set in an NZ bookshop. As a bookseller myself, i find some of jokes feel quite targeted to those of us more in the "know". Also since it centers around a missing person's case, i cannot help thinking everytime someone asks "what happened to Tracey?" That it's a nod at the Exponents song with a similar name.

I appreciate that its better for the injured character, but having someone with the power to instaheal really does remove what could've been an interesting development of character growth.

I very much dislike the use of the word "teenager" in fantasy novels. Then again, there's a lot of weirdly modern things in here that are done in a manner that makes me cringe. Sir Terry Pratchett added a modern flair to fantasy with fat more eloquence. He could've pulled off "trading cards" and "pronoun pins" in a fantasy setting in a way that wouldn't make me roll my eyes.

Already feeling a bit cheated because the story starts with the two in a secret relationship. Not sure how they could've started the story without it without reworking the plot but still... half the fun with a romance is the yearning. Where's the yearning?

I do enjoy it when books of a fantastical nature use real places. Now i qish to visit Sintra, Portual and experience the Initiation Well.

This book is 100% responsible for how messed up my dreams were last night.

Whoops I've read 20 books and it's not yet the end of January. I suppose it's time to increase my goal.

I suppose I should read a book with less pictures and more than 100 words per page now, shouldn't I?

At this rate I'm not going to read a single novel this year... my wonderful husband has managed to hook me into graphic novels. Already some of my GR friends are accusing me of cheating on this challenge (if I get to 20 before the end of January I'll increase my goal to 150, okay?)

With twenty-eight books to go (twenty-six if the two books I beta-read get published by Christmas), I need recommendations for short, compelling books that I can find easily and finish in a day or two (must average two point five days per book).

May yet resort to picture books!

I've not read the first in this series, but Booksellers NZ have kindly sent me this one to R&R. Seem to be following it okay though and I am familiar with Halt from the Rangers Apprentice books.

I'm never going to finish this book.

Yay, I'm finally back on track with my reading challenge!

The formating is very distracting and I have trouble focusing on the poems. tge story encompassing the poems is dry and rather dull. looks like a kids book cos of the cover - but totally is not.

Currently 3 chapters in: Lots of exposition. Uncomplicated writing style. Many grammatical and a few type - setting errors.

I'm not sure if any one book has ever so inspired me to seek out fanart and, unable to find any, inspire me to draw my own. Unfortunately, I've too much else on my schedule at the moment to start doodling this crazy cast of mutant characters. Shark lady! Mantis woman! Debonair fox-pheasant! Giant floating plant thing with tentacles and multiple heads! So weird, so awesome!
