Not very far in, but why was Oak surprised about the animals? Shouldn't the first thing they did upon arriving is check on them and feed them? And Shouldn't they have seen them when they agreed to purchase the farm? It shows a distinct lack of concern for living beings that you have recently taken on responsibility for!
Also, i suspect the author is taking on a romanticised view on what owning a farm is like.
