Can't quite make up my mind what to think of this book. The writing is often gorgeous, but the plot is elusive. The whole thing seems too baroque, like it's all icing and no cake. And I prefer my magic realism to be a lot lighter on the magic.

Quite charming so far. Reminiscent of The Club Dumas, Calvino and Foucault's Pendulum. Maybe translations from Spanish and Italian just all tend to come out sounding the same.

Taking a long time to get through, even though it's a decent read. I don't know why I'm so often drawn to these 900-page behemoths (Gaddis' Recogntions is waiting in the wings). The story's ok, but I find lately I have less patience for anything with a magical/supernatural element.
