There are very few books I've finished and thought, "I will read this again someday ". This had me saying it 50 pages in. This has the potential to become one of my favourite books.

Boy, did the wheels ever fall off this thing. What started as a beautiful fable has metastasized into this bloated, directionless mess.

Can't quite make up my mind what to think of this book. The writing is often gorgeous, but the plot is elusive. The whole thing seems too baroque, like it's all icing and no cake. And I prefer my magic realism to be a lot lighter on the magic.
