I've tried and tried and tried. I absolutely hate not finishing books but at some point you just have to say enough is enough. I am throwing in the towel on this one and letting it join the VERY small handful of books I can not finish.

Basically... this book needs editing, bad. There are so many consistency issues in timeline and character development that I literally can not list them all.

I tried... There were red editing marks with crossed out words in my copy and the plot wasn't making up for it.

:( They changed the narrator. Now I have to pay more attention so I'll know what the characters sound like now.

12 into this audiobook... the reader is not one of the best, he's got a monotone. :/

So this book is soooooo not what I thought it was going to be... From the cover and summary I was expecting humor but so for this is one of the saddest, most depressing books I've read in a while. It's gonna get better, RIGHT?!?

I like this series, and this is one of the better books, but still... they always take me so LONG to finish.

WOW... This book is SO intense and sad. I want to cry. So far one of the best books ever!

Wow, so far this book is both not what I was expecting and at the same time so much more. There's a very Gothic feel to the story that I wasn't expecting... My mind is racing trying to piece together what all is going on.

So far this is deliciously gothic and Nicolai is a rather delicious enigma.

This book is taking me longer to read than the others of the past week. It's not bad by any means but something just keeps allowing me to put it down and dilly-dally with other things.

While reading the prologue I've realize that I've read this book before. It was one of the hundreds my dad sold. I really liked it the last time(s) I read it though so :) ...

Over halfway through and yet not only does the "hero" still think the heroine's her brother, but he continues to consider their relationship that of father-son... ---> "'Don't worry Rosalind. I've taken him under my wing and shall see that no harm comes to him. I think of him as my own son, you know.' Roz thought perhaps she should tell him he should think of Tony as his daughter.

Eight chapters in and I feel like I could put down this book and completely forget about it... Well maybe not completely but close. So far the heroine is 16, the hero is 32, he wants to marry her mother fancies "he would make a good, strong father." ---->"Marriage to Eve, of course, would make him legal father to her children rather than just their guardian, and he rather fancied he would make a good, strong father."

"Tears gathered in his eyes again and rolled down his cheeks. He wiped them away with a handkerchief. 'Forgive mw, Fraulein, I shouldn't be so emotional. But her death was a terrible shock to me. You can't imagine.' 'I suppose not,' she murmured. But why wasn't it a relief to be free of that complaining, fat old woman? She was so critical and horrid."

The writing in this book is... interesting. For example, in this scene the heroine Sigrid is speaking with the Hero Jerry about an acquaintance of theirs whose wife had just been in an explosion and isn't likely to live... "She smiled at him. 'It's sweet of you to act concerned. I feel sorry for him. He acts so helpless and pathetic.' How thoughtful Jerry was!"

Though I do like the book, this is making for rather slow reading... Every time I start to read, I fall asleep.
