A bit long-winded but an interesting perspective. A very bottom-up approach that I plan to use in conjunction with a top-down approach.

Light read in graphic novel format with corny jokes. Got it to wet my feet before embarking on reading Saussure's _Course in General Linguistics_.

Read this and do at least the non-starred exercises, you should be on your way. The prose is a bit dense at times and even a doctorate holder like myself has to read some pages a couple of times. The exercises are superfun. One drawback is that the solution guide is available only to professors using this for a class, so practitioners have to kind of wonder if there are better solutions than what they came up with.

To a computer scientist some logical fallacies of the author are blaring, which has impacted my rate of reading it. Also an inherently difficult subject. Shifting my attention to somewhat more tractable topics for now.
