A bit long-winded but an interesting perspective. A very bottom-up approach that I plan to use in conjunction with a top-down approach.

Light read in graphic novel format with corny jokes. Got it to wet my feet before embarking on reading Saussure's _Course in General Linguistics_.

Read this and do at least the non-starred exercises, you should be on your way. The prose is a bit dense at times and even a doctorate holder like myself has to read some pages a couple of times. The exercises are superfun. One drawback is that the solution guide is available only to professors using this for a class, so practitioners have to kind of wonder if there are better solutions than what they came up with.
