This woman must think her readers are profoundly stupid. She literally just stated that she learned someone at Facebook (which of course she’s wanted to leave for years but made absolutely 0 steps towards doing so) is leaking to the New York Times. She then proceeds to explain how she “went straight to facebooks lawyers” to talk about the “paperwork” okay… and she wants us to believe she isn’t at fault.

“I find this all repugnant. I feel alienated from this new regime from the outset.” Well, babe, if you so strongly disagree with the political machinations of Facebook then it was kind of a weird choice for you to worm your way into the company specifically in order to build the infrastructure that would allow you, sorry, allow Facebook to carry out those political machinations. This is literally all your fault.

This book is giving what the monk was giving. Less insane though - plot line actually makes sense

The narrator of the audiobook.. really I don’t know who allowed her to narrate an audiobook. Never in my life have I heard such a monotone terrible narrator

I’m at the part in this book where Elizabeth starts manipulating her husband into an open relationship because she’s bored and refuses to work on the relationship with him bc she “knows too much about placebos” for that to work. I just hate her. I hate her so much she is horrible she is awful and it’s weird that this behavior is presented a normal, okay, and arguably correct when it is not

Not a great sign when I have to move the audiobook up to 3x speed from my standard 1.5-2x. Look it’s just that I don’t have ANY investment in ANY of these characters because I know they’ll be gone in a few pages and I’ll never hear from them again. No one seems to have any impact on the plot bc as far as I can tell there really is no overarching plot.

I swear every chapter introduces a brand new character you’ve never heard of before and will never hear of past that chapter. There are no real tangible through lines from one chapter to another. Makes this book extremely difficult to follow and be invested in - almost in the exact same way as one hundred years of solitude is

This genre of America-centric vaguely conservative op-ed masquerading as history should really be studied for their political effect on the reading pop. of the west. So far it has asserted that wheels were invented for transportation because the city demanded that transport (the wheel was invented for pottery) and seems to have just suggested that the population density of cities is responsible for homosexuality???

I am loving this book, but I do have to put forward one complaint: at times this book feels like it is just sentence after sentence explaining every single song Ella played at every single show and the audiences response (spoiler. They always love it, even when they’re critiquing the other performers.. which?? Idk if I believe).

Convinced this book won the Pulitzer purely because on page 93 it teaches it’s readers how to correctly pronounce Pulitzer

This book is written with that tone of melancholia that makes people think a popular fiction novel should be called literary fiction instead.
You know, the kind that makes the world seem fleshy, grotesque, and grey.
