So far it's really just backstory dumping. Chapters 1-3: Anne's dad is stubborn but needs to cut costs. Woe is he. Chapter 4: Anne was once in a relationship.

Slow starter.

It's funny how some authors paint using a lot of words, and others get away with the bare minimum and still paint vivid pictures. It's an especially stark contrast coming from a Robert Jordan book to this!

The TV show is apparently an excellent adaptation so far!

First two chapters are merely background about the main character(s), which is interesting, but the story itself doesn't kick off until chapter 3.

This book is fabulous so far. Characters feel spot on.

I wonder how much he has borrowed from his own childhood.

I thought I would love a Horrible Histories for adults, but the jokey tone feels kind of condescending at times.
