A dangling ambiguous snapshots of life captured in smooth evocative prose. Olga’s writing reminds me a lot of Jhumpa Lahiri’s.

This is an old complaint I have with Dalrymple ( form old articles/ essays) , his writing awfully telegrammatic and borrowed heavily from his writing influences. So That continues here and is a major distraction, thankfully though the lack of punch in writing in made up for diversity of the characters he explores .

Halfway, the overt dominance of the first person narration was a bit banal in what seemed to be very well composed but ordinary opening story. The internal lives of people coping with loss seems to be the under running theme in the character formation ( Shalini who has lost her mother and Zoya dealing with the loss of her son) The writing is well crafted though at times reads too workshop.

I had been eagerly waiting since it was announced. Have come through 3 essays - nearly half way through; the write-ups seem lazy, at times incoherent and jumping on here and there with a compulsion to cover a variety of topics than explore a particular one. So slightly disappointed. I am hoping the other half of essays makeup for some poorly organised writing and lazy editing in the first half.
