Halfway, the overt dominance of the first person narration was a bit banal in what seemed to be very well composed but ordinary opening story. The internal lives of people coping with loss seems to be the under running theme in character formation ( Shalini who has lost her mother and Zoe dealing with the loss of her son)The writing is well crafted though at times reads too workshop clinical.
