Setting it aside for a while. I'm on the fence about resuming later.,

I felt left out for never having read the widely proclaimed "greatest English language novel ever written." Two hundred pages in, I'm struggling to understand this book's lofty reputation. Other great English language novels--Moby Dick, much of Jane Austen, some Dickens--pull me in right from the start and rarely let go. Somebody tell me, please, when does Middlemarch start to get interesting?

Wolves tearing the guts out of gazelles. Dogs ripping the guts out of wolves. Wolves tearing open live horses. Men gunning down wolves. Detailed anthropology and biology of the Inner Mongolian grasslands. I'm putting this book aside for now until I'm ready for more raw bloody meat, gore, and natural history.

So far it reads like a well written academic textbook. Not nearly as fascinating or thought-provoking as the author's Two Cheers for Anarchism.
