Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes are High

Beth is 67% done with The Handmaid’s Tale (The Handmaid's Tale, #1)
My character, Offred, is realizing that she is not alone in her unhappiness with the new world. She is starting to revert to her more authentic self, but she must be careful or she will be found out. Her conflict is whether or not she should open up about her feelings to those around her. She knows they could be plants, testing her loyalty to the cause. I think she will do something drastic very soon.

Beth is on page 5 of 246 of The Things They Carried
E2 Tim O'Brien introduces members of a squadron serving in Vietnam as well as the items they carry with them. In this section, he details the character's assigned items and includes the weight, writing, "pistol...2.9 pounds, unloaded...PRC-25 radio...26 pounds...grenade launcher...5.9 pounds unloaded (5). By listing these weighted items, O'Brien foreshadows the the intangible "things" soldiers must also carry.

Beth is on page 37 of 274 of Notice and Note: Strategies for Close Reading
In the section of the textbook, the author is describing the signposts of good, quality close reading: "Close reading should suggest close attention to the text; close attention to the relevant experience, thought, and memory of the reader...and close attentions to the interactions among those elements" (Beers & Probst). In other words, close reading requires the readers focused commitment to understanding the text.

Beth is on page 327 of 404 of UnSouled (Unwind, #3)
Cam and Connor are reluctantly working together to bring down Proactive Citizenry. They both feel that the institution is "funding something very, very dark" (Unsouled, 327). The encounters with Roberta, a Proactive Scientist, also suggests the same idea. She is hiding something and becomes flustered when Cam's questions are too close to the issue. I wonder what could be worse than stealing kids' body parts?

I just finished reading chapter 40 where I get the point of view of Bam for the first time. She agrees to do something for Hayden, a character introduced in the previous book, but in agreeing to Hayden's request, she feels as if "she's making a deal with the devil" (UnSouled, 270). I get the feeling that their conversation plays a pivotal role in the plot line for the Storks, a group of kids on the run from the law.
