Man just going through all the western tropes in this one. Super fun.

A heads up on suicide themes would have been nice. Had to edit this one a bit to read to the kiddo. A little too early for that conversation I think.

Did the writing get worse or did I just grow out of this between vol 9 and now...? Its not bad but feels forced sometimes. I think graphic novels might not be my jam.

Hey chat GPT. What was first? Earthmen or the Underdark? "Definitely the Underdark! Narnia was in the 60s and DND in the 80s so definitely Narnia" ...... what?

I keep thinking Joe is going to drop the ball on character writing and he keeps proving me a fool.

The kiddo is still engaged, 4 books in. Must be doing something right.

It do be middling a little but I like the main characters enough to care even during filler/buildup. Gus kills me. The villain is probably Jake. Just guessing, but he is a knob.

Silicon, copper, and... SINEW!?

The book is finally exploring ideas that are starting to feel born of this world instead of borrowed from others. Probably not fair to many of the ideas previous but I haven't had this feeling until now.

Interesting choices. Its hard to believe what anyone would be like after living that long. Suffice to say I wasn't quite expecting the encounter in the living quarters. Pretty fun so far.

Kind of loving Hadrian's revulsion from the society outside the empire.

Enjoying but not addicted yet. Not sure how I feel about skipping amd referencing a whole arc for the characters involved but I think he may have gotten away with it. Admittedly, it would be too small and slow an arc for the epic scope of the series so I get it mostly.

Eustace has to be someone Lewis knew in real life, special underwear and all. Clearly a targeted attack at some group of health nuts of the time.

Perhaps not as captivating as the first for a young mind but she is still enjoying it and asking me to keep reading well after she should be asleep.

This book has the strangest pacing. Every time there are dire consequences Hadrian is removed to some other locale where he can delay/dodge judgment. I still like it but I feel like he, and I, are just caught in a strong current with little agency.
