-sigh- Here we go again, with jumping to conclusions and a romantic miscommunication that could've been entirely avoided by Georgie actually *talking* to Darcy.

The pattern of the deaths was obvious from the very first one, and now that we hit the fourth one, I'm facepalming (but not in a bad way) at how it fits the pattern.

I find it entertaining that there's a direct parallel between the personalities and interrelationships of Stephen/Gaby and Carole/Jude, and I can't help wondering if Simon Brett did it on purpose (or even noticed it). I'm kind of shipping Carole and Jude now....

[SPOILERS] Maybe I'm just naturally paranoid, but I can see about a hundred better ways Jason could have gone off the grid to get away from himselves.

Maybe it's just the structure, but James seems to be pushing connections that aren't necessarily there and ignoring some things that are currently well known about serial killer psychology.

I can accept misunderstandings, even ones that are a bit far-fetched, but it irritates me when the villain relies on far-fetched misunderstandings for his nefarious plan to work.

I feel like I should be reading the text version of this at the same time as listening to the audiobook because there are so many alien terms and I know I'm going to lose track.

Ouch. Slammed hard into the wall of antiquated gender-based psychology. "Women are like X, and men are like Y." Most of those differences are a result of cultural conditioning, so assuming that an unsub can't be female because "that's not how women are" is both sexist and a terrible way to handle a police inquiry. I'll allow leeway, since this was written over 20 years ago.

Pausing here because it turns out this is a candidate for "books to listen to with my son." I'll pick it up again from the beginning when he and I finish what we're currently listening to.

Falco and company are chasing an escaped leopardess through the baths, and for a moment I misheard "tepidarium" as "trepidarium," which, tbh, sounds really appropriate.

Ooookay, I just figured out where this is going, and the fact that it was written in the mid-1980s became glaringly obvious. No spoilers here, but I'll elucidate in my review when I'm done.

Classic hardboiled/noir mystery, but set in 1930s Germany. It's odd, though, hearing the hardboiled dialogue in John Lee's British accent....

So far I'm loving the world building. My only complaint is the concept that all AIs are, by default, "he" in the way that all ships are "she." Seems to me there's a huge difference between gendering an inanimate object and potentially mis-gendering a self-aware being.
