Realizing how many parallels certain parts of this has with the Name of the Wind. And also, translating it from Latin alongside, how much of it parallels Poetics of Personification.

Really just the making and unmaking of persons / figures / words / names / nouns.

I’ll finish this soon but want to put a pin here and say that DISAPPEARING ACT is the most brilliant of the set. It’s a clean, harsh point that Bradbury could have written. Really quite beautiful

From here on out, I’m rating everything either 4 or 5 stars mainly because (1) there’s someone out there who loves it (2) stars are for consumers, not reflective readers, (3) I try to reflect on books and get at their fourfold layers of meaning both publicly and privately

All of this in mind, I’m not here to judge authors and their work unless by “judge” we mean “adjudicate and interpret meaning”

After reading other authors, I’m shocked most folks only post a dozen or so notes. I’ve eclipsed that in the first two chapters.

It’ll be thorough, vulnerable, funny, and insightful.

(3) Mendlebaum's translation is FUN. And that's seldom the case with headier types, but I have enjoyed savoring this.

This is the one you should get if you want to try it.

Something — other than the obvious motif of transformation — that keeps coming to mind within this particular version is how often (1) folks do not consider the consequences of their actions and thoughts upon themselves and others (2) folks pursue reckless desires without reflecting on the deepening of those desires — not the eye, but the means of seeing; not the ear, but the true means of hearing

The last book my late father bought me. I'm unsure if I'll ever read this now that he passed of COVID. I want to, but I don't know if I can bring myself to start. I'm really torn, but that's where this one stands.

What books are we looking forward to in 2021? I'm looking forward to casting off the dead skin of this thesis and moving on to more fiction and classics: finishing the Greeks and diving headlong into some epic fantasy.

Thinking of trying Abercrombie and Erikson

Realize the hypocrisy of this, but this is just too serialized in order to hold my attention. I suppose it's because, per Vonnegut, a sci fi book should work like an elegant joke. Or per King, should hold that Dionysian and Apollonian tension in balance. Or per Bradbury, fill us with wonder and nostalgia. Or per Lewis, challenge our metaphysical assumptions with tech (which this does, at least). Blerg.
