Omg. There is a LOT of book left and I’m not sure I can do it. You saw this guy on your bus home/ keep taking that bus. He saw you on the bus- he goes back to that stop. Oh no too easy. And! By page 88 we’ve gone from Christmas 2009 to Christmas 2010, yet Laurie talks about she’s become accustomed to the situation because it’s been a few years. ITS BEEN ONE YEAR!

Oh I so love mercy and Elvis and this little Vermont world. But OMG. She is beyond stupid in this one. I’m getting angry at her.

What? Character is wearing 3 inch heels. Then says she’s 5’5” and heels bring her to the height of an average woman….. so she’s actually 5’2” I’d assume, but they way this is written makes it sound like she’s 5’5” wearing the 3” heels and arguing that average height is 5’8”. Poor writing!

Ok. So just a few pages ago we meet Eliza’s 16 year old twin daughters. Now she’s reminiscing about when she was “newly married” to Henry, 20 years ago at age 18. His parting gift when he went t to sea was the twins. Impressive since we were just told they’re 16 and not 20.

Oh wow. I haven’t rolled my eyes this hard in a long time. I’d chuck it except I want to know Millie’s backstory, and what happened in that teaser chapter.

Oh dear god. Now a whole cadre of people at the cafe had no idea Dan was a famous writer?! A cafe known for hosting aspiring writers, and NOBODY there recognizes or knows owns the name of a FAMOUS AUTHOR?

When I hit the past that was “I don’t know what I’m telling you this, it’s not really part of things…” I knew this was going to be a DNF. It’s written beautifully, but ambles along with no momentum and just hasn’t hooked me. Knowing that chunks of it aren’t relevant was the nail in the coffin.

How is it possible that this woman is meeting regularly with a famous author, and has not yet googled him? Totally not believable. The day she met him she’d have done a deep dive.

The math ain’t mathing. Russ was questioned in the 1972 death, freshly home from Vietnam. Let’s say he was 20. “Current day” death talks about distracted drivers texting while driving, and Russ’ mom notes it’s been 53 years since she bore him. So current day is 2005. Nobody was texting and driving in 2005!

Oh good lord. Why can editors never check dates? She was 10 when her brothers died and 46 in 1950. So she was born in 1904. Except barely a few pages later she says her brothers died in the battle of Mons, which was in 1918. Grr. Drives me batty.

Good lord these people are insufferable! What year is this taking place? The nearly 70yo mom can’t pronounce WiFi? And is tech illiterate? My mom is 75 and knows WiFi, texting, online banking etc. ugh. The out of touch parent trope is so out dated.

So far not so great. Might be a DNF.

Wow. 68% in and our main character just *might* be seeing a problem with white savior-ism. This book so far is dreadfully whitewashing things. I’ll stick it out to see if the epiphany happens…. Somehow I doubt it will.

I cannot believe that the title character does not show up till 42% of the way into the book! I loved her Shetland series, but man this book is DRAGGING. Gonna stick it out though.

So far a little over the top. Every single character has a dramatic secret….

How tedious is this book? I put it down and read a Christian chick lit book instead.

Earlier the book said Emmet was 33 years older than Cam. Cam is 32. How is it Emmetts 56 birthday?? Math fail.

Interesting to fictionalize the family aboard the ship with a name that is a famous Southern name.... (yeah, I Google while I read)

More than halfway through and nothing has happened. Started great with the 6 sisters keeping the craft alive, now is one selfish rotten daughter after another......

this book definitely should be required reading for all high schools.
