I can see why Queen's Thief fans like this

Really enjoying this so far. I'm bracing myself, because I tend to like the author's premises, but end up not liking some part of the execution partway through. I'm hoping this would be different.

Oh dear, I was looking forward to this book, but I'm finding that I don't... like the main character. She's supposed to be a good investigator, but she has not once done any investigating on page. She was given 6 months for this assignment, the book begins 1 week before its deadline, and all she thinks about is a boy from 15 years ago. Not a good look so far.

I have high hopes for this. I wish it's as wholesome as The Goblin Emperor, because the good Lord knows I need wholesome right now.

The beginning has set up a pretty high bar for the rest of the book. I'm excited but scared at the same time.

My hold from the library came in earlier than expected, and as a principle of courtesy, I always prioritize library borrows before my own purchased books. Sorry LoTR! You'll have to wait a bit again.

This novel is so strangely paced...

This isn't as engaging as Sabriel, not gonna lie. The few times I felt really excited was when we got on-screen appearances by Sabriel and Touchstone. I feel like I'm reading for their sakes.

This is starting to read like a thriller. Any time the authors propose a solution, the next section would be like, "Wait, there's this other very specific scenario in which this algorithm totally and miserably fails!!" Chapter 9 has been section after section of exactly that.

I'm re-reading the last third of this book in preparation for the sequel. I am still SAD and DISAPPOINTED that the Goodreads community doesn't find this book as awesome as I do.

I'm so torn about this book. I love the concept, but I'm really struggling with the execution.
