Whoa... this is the worst edited book I've ever read. Entire paragraphs are repeated verbatim across different essays in the book (chapters 2 & 3). Entire passages are repeated even in the same chapter (chapter 3). It's riddled with typos and spelling errors. One of the few books on precolonial Filipino history to have come out in the last decade, and they couldn't have spent more budget on an editor?

I have a whole rant on Chapter 3 itself... not only is it poorly edited, but it is so weakly argued (perhaps because the duplication of passages make it so meandering). I'll write more in my review, but not only did it not convince me that precolonial Tagalogs were literate, but I became more convinced by those arguing against this thesis, whose arguments Woods was trying to (and failing) to combat.
