I quit reading. Bored. Read a summary of what happened in the rest of the book and my boredom would have only increased. Bad writing and uninteresting characters. I wish I would have just stuck to reading Ishmael.

"Furthermore, real, documented threats of terrorism or national security have occurred on the Canadian border, not the Mexican border. Yet, sig nific antly more border patrol and enforcement activities took place on the Mexican border under the guise of national security a ft er 9/11." -- not saying that you are wrong, but where is the citation?

"After the strike was settled, in 1917, the city of Bisbee removed 1,200 Latino laborers." This is a misrepresentation. The strike was coordinated by the IWW, a radical union that organized across ethnic bounds. A lot of the striking miners were rounded up and marched out of town and loaded onto cattle cars headed for the N.M. desert were Latino, but it was a mixed bunch that included Europeans/Euro Americans.

For some reason, I pictured Sensei as a Japanese version of Doc Cochran (Deadwood). Moral and Quirky. Good hearted and sweet, but at times odd and bristly. It’s a quick read. Funny, sad, and endearing story.

Adam is reading Sea of Poppies (Ibis Trilogy, #1)
The characters didn't engage me and the vernacular was difficult to get through reading on my commute. I didn't have the patience for it, which I now somewhat regret because (having now read the summary) it seems like a cool and (complex) story arc. Still I don't have any interest in returning to the book. I could not invested in the characters.

"If it draws blood or breaks heads," said Francis, "I know how it tastes."

His lesson to Francis was this: that life is full of caprice and missed connections, that thievery is wrong, especially if you get caught, that even Italians cannot outrun bullets, that a proffered hand in a moment of need is a beautiful thing."

I reading my very first (translated) manga back-to-front and right-to-left. It's like a combination of the Japanese novel "Fires on the Plain" and "Beetle Bailey." So far the humor supersedes the horror, but that could very well change in the second half of the book.

Nevermind. The fond memories of Pittsburgh coasters and grandmothers veered suddenly into much more somber territory.

I did not expect this book to begin with reference to the author's bubbe and Kennywood. If noodle kugel is on the next page, my bobie may wake to an unexpected knock on her door.

Plumbers brilliantly converted a few of the now dysfunctional armored vehicles into public bathrooms for those taking part in the sit-in. [resourceful problem-solving and symbolic response of a largely non-violent citizen movement to state aggression. awesome.]
