Hysteria became considered the synthesis of somnabulism, catalepsy, lethargy and the magnetic diseases Also explores the earliest models of the human mind, di- and poly-psychism, and how Jung and Freud both transitioned from the former to the latter.

2. The Emergence of Dynamic Psychiatry
Suuper cool chapter. Kicks off with Anton Mesmer (Mesmer -> mesmerize) suggesting that exorcism is actually a state of 'animal magnetism', crazy idea but his main contributions is in shifting attention onto the rapport between patient and healer, disregarding the ritualistic elements of exorcism and possession. Spiritism and 'magnetic sleep' from Puysegur also covered (hypnosis)
