Kicks off with Anton Mesmer (Mesmer -> mesmerize) suggesting that exorcism is actually a state of 'animal magnetism', crazy idea but his main contributions is in shifting attention onto the rapport between patient and healer, disregarding the ritualistic elements of exorcism and possession. Spiritism and 'magnetic sleep' from Puysegur also covered (hypnosis)
