Zhu Bajie must be one of the most unlikeable characters in fiction. Sanzang is similarly among the most credulous, but at least he appears to be fazed by the violence that even Avalokiteshvara doesn't seem to mind. Sun Wukong was too powerful for the armies of Heaven, so why is he so weak when fighting a single monster now?

Very interesting but extremely challenging to read. Some paragraphs have more Tibetan than English, and the Tibetan is impossible to read because it's transliterated the written way rather than to reflect how it's spoken.

These last 20 pages have been quite compelling. Less of a repeat of endless names and more a religious history along with foreign affairs.

It's definitely a lot stronger when alternating between Kaladin and Shallon. However, I'm still scratching my head trying to figure out what is the point of the story. Where is the narrative taking us? Sure, there's lots of work building and stuff, which is important, but I really wonder if it came at the cost of an actual plot.

Only 70 pages to go. Only 70 pages to go.

I'm not even sure why I hate this book so much. I've read and loved far duller books. There's a lot of interesting tidbits. Japan has a fascinating history and some of my favorite movies and novels are Japanese.

But every single time I open it up, I go crazy.
