Ok wow. This book is becoming more phenomenal as I progress. I liked the relative banality of the earlier narrative, the everyday life aspect despite the future setting. And as the story now pans back and out, it is all becoming more panoramic and more consequential. I'm looking forward to the climax and denouement.

PS this reads like those annoying YouTube bullshit music 'reveals' doesn't it. Sorry.

Really good. Some slightly cheaper plot shortcuts utilised but on balance is heading towards a solid 5 start rating. I'm not an avid science fiction reader, being drawn more to Emily St John Mandel versus Arthur C Clarke, but Carpathians is right in my sweet spot.

Despite there being half a dozen inconsistencies In the plot (ie a group of Hunter's were lamenting to each other That there was no prey to be had, while six pages laved off our protagonist is looking over a massive herd of deer) and also some inconsistencies in character behaviour I will see this one through to the end. Probably heading toward a three star review Let's go

Weir really should be listed under the YA category.

Gave up. Sorry, too much repetition, poor editing, too much emphasis on some things and almost none on others. Very inconsistent writing, but again, I blame the editor.

Seriously, this started out as so far-fetched I laughed out loud at some of the ridiculous superlatives and descriptions. I'm not going to kill it for anyone who loves this stuff - it has a rating over 4 after all, but if you're after a reflection of the real world, and real people, this ain't it.

I barely made it 20% of the way in and had to ditch it. Execrable stuff.

Second time around for this book - I read it about 15 years ago, from memory after reading the inspector Anders series from Marshall Browne.

Browne died about ten years ago, and gets very little fanfare. He's an excellent Australian writer. He's not Peter temple, but he's up there.

A lovely gentle book which is now building up to some sort of major event. The tension ! !

Great writing. Trying to find a quiet spot on this noisy Mother's Day to read on!

Halfway through - there seems to be a heavy plot reliance on (then) illicit sexual behaviour. Half the characters are gay, male and female, which strikes me as a bit unrealistic. Or am I uncomfortable as a straight man reading about the realities of gay life in France during WW2.

I have no information on the author, but it appears he could use the skills of a stronger editor. The story is great fun, twists and turns nicely, and is reasonably well-plotted so far. I have concerns with occasional lapses of continuity, and plot twists that sometimes tear at the patina of reality. Also, slightly too much modern jargon and US spelling causes me some heartburn.
